Teaching early readers in a Classical Kinder to 3rd grade begins with teaching children to read and read well. Our emergent readers model is rooted in phonetic instruction and whole word learning, emergent writing, beginning penmanship, memorization, recitations, etc. We start reading easy, classical literature books, often pausing to ask comprehension questions. As grades and skill levels progress, more complex analysis (plot, theme, characters, symbols) is introduced.
